The leaves are kidney-shaped, up to 6 cm long, and both the leaves and flowers are arranged in a basal rosette. The flowers are typically dark violet or white and are scented.

The plant contains the alkaloid violin, about 30 cyclotides, and triterpenoids. These compounds are constituents of the essential oil extracted from the plant.

Uses:

The sweet scent of Viola odorata has been used in cosmetic fragrances and perfumes. The leaves and flowers are edible and have been used in culinary applications, such as violet syrup. The plant also contains a cannabinoid peptide called 'vodo-C1' that acts as a selective CB2 receptor agonist.
