The chemical constituents of Verbena officinalis include β-sitosterol, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, 3-epiursolic acid, 3-epioleanolic acid, minor triterpenoids of derivatives of ursolic acid and oleanolic acids, verbenalin, hastatoside, verbascoside, β-sitosterol-D-glucoside, and verbenol. Hastatoside and verbenalin have sleep-promoting properties.
Verbena officinalis has been used for its medicinal properties since classical antiquity. It is known for its use as a herbal tea to treat infections and fever. It has also been used as a soporific drug similar to valerian. In traditional Austrian medicine, it is used internally for treating infections and fever.
