The plant contains a volatile oil with toxic compounds including thujone, which can cause convulsions and liver and brain damage. Other active components include 1,8-cineole, trans-thujone, camphor, and myrtenol. The oil is used for various purposes but must be handled with caution due to its toxicity.

Uses:

Historically, tansy has been used for medicinal purposes to treat intestinal worms, rheumatism, digestive problems, fevers, and sores. It was also used to induce abortions and to help women conceive. In traditional Native American medicine, it has been used for backache and as a tonic. Tansy is also known for its insect-repelling properties and has been used in companion planting to repel pests like the Colorado potato beetle. It can be used as a dyestuff to produce a golden-yellow color and in floral arrangements.
