Betonica officinalis, commonly known as betony, is a rhizomatous, patch-forming, grassland herbaceous perennial that grows to 30–60 cm tall. It has stalked leaves on upright stems, which are narrowly oval with a heart-shaped base and toothed margins. The flowers have a calyx that is 5–7 mm long with five teeth edged with bristles, and a corolla that is 1–1.5 cm long with an upper lip that is flat and almost straight when seen from the side. The plant flowers in mid-summer, typically from July to September.

The aerial parts of Betonica officinalis contain phenylethanoid glycosides such as betonyosides A-F, acetoside, acetoside isomer, campneosides II, forsythoside B, and leucosceptoside B. The roots contain diterpene glycosides betonicosides A-D and the diterpene betonicolide.

Uses:

Betonica officinalis has a long history of medicinal use, including applications for easing pain and fever after childbirth, preventing drunkenness, treating snake and mad dog bites, curing various pains, and addressing nervous system disorders. Modern herbalists prescribe it for anxiety, gallstones, heartburn, high blood pressure, migraine, neuralgia, and to prevent sweating. It can also be used as an ointment for cuts and sores.
