Solanum dulcamara L.
Solanum dulcamara
Solanum dulcamara, commonly known as bittersweet nightshade or bittersweet, is a semi-woody herbaceous perennial vine. It can scramble over other plants and reach heights of up to 4 meters with suitable support, but typically grows between 1-2 meters. The leaves are roughly arrowhead-shaped and often lobed at the base, measuring 4-12 cm in length. The flowers are star-shaped with five purple petals and yellow stamens, arranged in loose clusters of 3-20. The fruit is a small, ovoid red berry about 1 cm long, soft and juicy with the appearance of a tiny tomato. The plant is native to Europe and Asia but has spread widely, including in North America.

The plant contains alkaloids such as solanine (found in unripe fruits), solasodine (from flowers), and beta-solamarine (from roots). These alkaloids have been found to inhibit the growth of bacteria like E. coli and S. aureus, and have antidermatophytic activity against various pathogens, which may help in treating conditions like ringworm.
Solanum dulcamara has been used medicinally for various conditions, including mild recurrent eczema, psoriasis, scabies, and dermatomycosis. The stem is particularly used for skin conditions and has been applied externally as a supportive therapy in chronic eczema. The leaves can treat warts and tumors, while the fruit is used for respiratory tract and joint conditions. The roots have been used by Indigenous people of North America to relieve fever and nausea.
