The plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, such as senecionine and seneciphylline. These alkaloids are toxic to humans and livestock when ingested in large amounts, causing liver damage.
Senecio vulgaris has been used historically as a medicinal herb for its purgative and diuretic properties. However, due to its toxicity, it is not recommended for internal use. It also serves as a food source for some birds and insects.
