Jacobaea vulgaris Gaertn.
Jacobaea vulgaris
Jacobaea vulgaris, commonly known as ragwort, is a biennial or perennial plant native to northern Eurasia. It typically grows in dry, open places and has erect stems that can reach heights of 0.3 to 2.0 meters. The leaves are pinnately lobed with a blunt end lobe and have an unpleasant smell, earning it names like 'stinking willie' and 'stammerwort'. The flowers are bright yellow, arranged in dense, flat-topped clusters, and bloom from June to November. The plant is known for its significant nectar production, which supports various pollinators.

The plant contains several pyrrolizidine alkaloids, including jacobine, jaconine, jacozine, otosenine, retrorsine, seneciphylline, senecionine, and senkirkine. These alkaloids make the plant toxic to certain animals, particularly livestock like cattle and horses.
Despite its toxicity, ragwort is valued for its ecological importance. It provides nectar for pollinators and serves as a food source for at least 77 insect species, some of which are rare or threatened. Historically, it has been used for medicinal purposes and as a dye source.
