Yellow rattle is a herbaceous annual wildflower with opposite, simple leaves and upright stems. The plant grows up to 10–50 centimeters tall with a four-angled stem that can be simple or branched. The leaves are sessile, somewhat heart-shaped at the base, and ovate to lanceolate in shape. The plant is known for its dry capsule fruit containing loose, rattling seeds. It is hemiparasitic and can parasitize grasses (Poaceae) and legumes (Fabaceae).
