Ranunculus acris, commonly known as meadow buttercup or tall buttercup, is a herbaceous perennial plant that grows to a height of 30 to 100 cm. It features glossy yellow flowers about 25 mm across with five overlapping petals and numerous stamens. The leaves are compound with finely cut, hairy leaflets. It is native to Eurasia and has been introduced worldwide, often becoming a weed in pastures.

Chemistry:

The plant contains the glycoside ranunculin, which can cause abdominal pains and intestinal disorders when ingested. It also contains oils that are semi-poisonous to livestock, causing blistering.

Uses:

Native Americans used Ranunculus acris for various medicinal purposes, including treating headaches, boils, abscesses, oral thrush, diarrhea, and excess water in the blood. The Cherokee also cooked and ate the leaves as greens.
