Pulmonaria officinalis, commonly known as lungwort or common lungwort, is an evergreen perennial plant with a rhizomatous growth habit. It features basal leaves that are green, cordate, and elongated with distinct white or pale green patches. The plant produces small bunches of flowers that transition from red or pink to blue-purple during anthesis. The flowering period extends from March through May, and the seeds ripen from May to June.

The flowers of Pulmonaria officinalis contain a dye belonging to the anthocyanin family, which changes color from red (acidic) to blue (alkaline). The leaves have tiny bumps and are quite hairy. The plant is diploid with a chromosome number of 2n = 14.

Uses:

Traditionally used to treat coughs and diseases of the chest due to its medicinal properties. The leaves are also a food source for the caterpillars of the moth Ethmia pusiella.
