Polygonum aviculare

Polygonum aviculare

Common Knotgrass

Common knotgrass is an annual, low-prostrate herb with semi-erect, branching stems. It forms patches up to about 2 m across as it matures. The plant has alternate, linear-lanceolate leaves that are longer on the main stems than on the branches. The leaves fall early, and the plant is hairless and green but may appear mealy due to powdery mildew. The inflorescences are groups of 1-6 flowers in the leaf axils, each with green flowers having white or pink margins. The fruit is a dark brown nut enclosed in the perianth.
