Ribwort plantain is a perennial herb with leafless, silky, hairy flower stems that can grow up to 45 centimeters tall. It has lanceolate basal leaves with strong parallel veins and a deeply furrowed flower stalk ending in an ovoid inflorescence of many small flowers. Each inflorescence can produce up to 200 seeds. The plant is known for its ability to thrive in disturbed areas and has a mode of reproduction that can vary among populations, including wind-dispersed pollen and occasional bee pollination.

The plant contains phenylethanoids such as acteoside (verbascoside), cistanoside F, lavandulifolioside, plantamajoside and isoacteoside. It also contains the iridoid glycosides aucubin and catalpol.

Uses:

Ribwort plantain is used in herbal teas and remedies. A tea from the leaves is used as a cough medicine. In traditional Austrian medicine, the leaves have been used internally (as syrup or tea) or externally (fresh leaves) for treatment of disorders of the respiratory tract, skin, insect bites, and infections. The young leaves can be eaten raw or cooked.
