Papaver rhoeas L.
Papaver rhoeas
Papaver rhoeas, commonly known as the common poppy or corn poppy, is an annual herbaceous plant in the poppy family. It is native to North Africa and temperate Eurasia but has been introduced to other continents except Antarctica. It thrives in disturbed soil and was once abundant in agricultural fields before the use of herbicides. The plant has large, showy flowers that are typically vivid red with a black spot at the base of each petal. It can grow up to 70 centimeters in height and produces capsules that contain numerous seeds.

The corn poppy is widely grown in gardens for its ornamental value. The black seeds are edible and can be used in bread or pastries. In traditional folk medicine, the petals were used to create a syrup to help children sleep and to treat gout, aches, and pains. The petals also contain a red dye used in medicines and wines.
