Spiny restharrow is an erect, bushy perennial plant characterized by its wiry, branched stem which is downy and nearly always spiny. It grows to a height of approximately 46 cm (18 in). The leaves are small, dark green, oval or trefoil-shaped with toothed leaf-like stipules at their base. The flowers are deep pink and white, with the wings shorter than the hooked keel.

Historically, Ononis spinosa has been used in traditional Russian herbal medicine as an anodyne, antiphlogistic, aperient, coagulant, and diuretic. It has been applied to treat eczema, skin problems, hemorrhoids, chronic constipation, and infections of the anus. In medieval Russia, it was also used in the manufacturing process of bulat steel.
