Bastard Balm
Bastard balm is a flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to central and southern Europe, from the British Isles and Portugal east to Turkey, Ukraine, and the Baltic States. The plant grows to an average height of 30-50 cm, with a minimum of 20 cm and a maximum of 60 cm. It has erect, hairy stems and a perennial short rhizome. The leaves are oval, bluntly-toothed, quite hairy, and arranged in opposite pairs up the stems. The flowers are labiate, usually white or pale pink with a large pinkish-purple blotch on the lower lip, and are pollinated by bees and moths.
