Gypsywort is a perennial plant with slender underground runners, growing to a height of about 20 to 80 cm. It has stalkless or short-stalked leaves in opposite pairs, with hairy, narrowly lanceolate-ovate blades that are sometimes pinnately-lobed. The inflorescence forms a terminal spike with dense whorls of white or pale pink flowers. Each flower has a two-lipped corolla about 4 mm long, with a slightly convex upper lip and a three-lobed lower lip bearing a red 'nectar mark'. The plant produces a four-chambered schizocarp fruit.
