The plant contains compounds that are believed to have diuretic and fever-reducing properties. However, it may be mildly toxic to livestock.
Common toadflax is sometimes cultivated for cut flowers, which are long-lasting in the vase. It has been used in folk medicine for various ailments, including as a laxative and diuretic. A tea made from the leaves was used for jaundice, dropsy, and enteritis with drowsiness. For skin diseases and piles, either a leaf tea or an ointment made from the flowers was used. Additionally, a milk-based tea has been used as an insecticide.
