Lapsana communis L.
Lapsana communis
Lapsana communis, commonly known as common nipplewort, is an annual or perennial herbaceous plant. It grows to a height of 1-1.2 meters with erect, hairy branching stems and milky sap. The leaves are alternate and spirally arranged; larger basal leaves are often pinnate with a large oval terminal leaflet and smaller side leaflets, while higher stem leaves are simple and oval. The flowers are yellow, produced in capitula 1-2 cm in diameter, arranged in loose clusters at the top of the stem. The capitulum is surrounded by involucral bracts, with outer small and inner erect, narrow, and stiff. The florets are ligulate, pale yellow with a five-toothed tip, each having five stamens and a gynoecium of two fused carpels. The fruit is a cypsela retained within the hardened involucral bracts until dispersed by wind or animals. Pappus is absent.
