Red Dead-Nettle
Red dead-nettle is an annual herbaceous flowering plant native to Eurasia but also found in North America. It grows with square stems reaching 5–20 cm (rarely up to 40 cm) in height. The leaves are green at the bottom and purplish at the top, with fine hairs, and measure 2–4 cm in length. The flowers are bright red-purple with a distinctive hood-like petal and may be produced year-round.

The essential oil of red dead-nettle is rich in germacrene D. The seed oil contains 16% of an acid known as (−)-octadeca-5,6-trans-16-trienoic acid (lamenallenic acid). Other components include unsaturated esters like oleate, linoleate, and linolenate. The plant also contains phenylethanoid glycosides named lamiusides A, B, C, D, and E, as well as a flavonol 3-O-glucoside-6″-O-malonyltransferase.
Young plants are edible and can be used in salads or stir-fries. The flowers can be crystallized with sugar and egg white. Traditionally, red dead-nettle has been used in folk medicine for its analgesic properties and is known to have a strong antioxidant effect. It is also used topically to soothe irritated or sore skin.
