Genista tinctoria, commonly known as dyer's greenweed or dyer's broom, is a deciduous shrub that grows to 60–90 cm tall and 100 cm wide. It has woody, slightly hairy stems and branched growth. The leaves are nearly sessile, glabrous, and lanceolate. The plant produces golden yellow pea-like flowers in erect narrow racemes from spring to early summer, and the fruit is a long, shiny pod shaped like a green bean pod.
