Fumaria officinalis, commonly known as common fumitory or earth smoke, is an herbaceous annual plant with weakly erect and scrambling stalks that grow to about 10–50 cm in length. It has slender green leaves and pink flowers that are two-lipped and spurred, typically appearing from April to October in the northern hemisphere. The plant can have up to 60 flowers per spike, and its fruit is an achene containing one seed.

The plant contains isoquinoline alkaloids protopine and allocryptopine. It also includes potassium salts, tannins, and fumaric acid.

Uses:

Traditionally used as a digestive aid and diuretic. Modern uses include treatment for constipation, cystitis, arteriosclerosis, rheumatism, arthritis, and as a blood purifier. It has been marketed as a herbal medicine in France since 1963 and is legally sold in various forms in Austria, Germany, France, and Spain. It contains alkaloids that modify abnormal bile flow.
