Filipendula ulmaria, commonly known as meadowsweet or meadwort, is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows in damp meadows. It is native to most of Europe and Western Asia but has been introduced and naturalized in North America. The plant features tall, erect stems that can grow up to 2 meters and have a reddish or purple hue. The leaves are dark green on the upper side and whitish underneath, with a divided and serrated structure. The flowers are creamy-white, clustered in irregular cymes, and have a strong sweet smell reminiscent of antiseptics.

Chemistry:

The chemical constituents of meadowsweet include salicin, flavone glycosides, essential oils, and tannins. Salicylic acid can be derived from the buds of meadowsweet, which was used to synthesize acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).

Uses:

Meadowsweet has been used traditionally for its medicinal properties, particularly as a remedy for an acidic stomach. The whole plant has a pleasant taste and flavour, making it useful as a strewing herb to give rooms a pleasant aroma. It has also been used to flavour vinegar, wine, beer, and desserts like panna cotta. A natural black dye can be obtained from the roots using a copper mordant.
