The plant contains various irritants, including a milky sap that can cause skin reactions and burns/blisters. The mature bracts have tiny hair-like barbs that can cause mild skin irritation.
The roots have been used as a purgative. However, the plant is poisonous if ingested in large quantities and can be harmful to cattle and horses. It is also known to be attractive as an ornamental but its invasive nature makes it necessary to control its spread.
