Rough chervil is a biennial herb with stems that can grow up to 100 cm in length. The stems are often purple-spotted and swollen below the nodes. The leaves are bi- to tri-pinnate, dark green, and hairy on both surfaces. The flowers are white and arranged in compound umbels with usually 6-12 hairy rays. The plant is poisonous and contains toxins that can cause gastro-intestinal inflammation, drowsiness, vertigo, and cardiac weakness if ingested.
