Centaurea macrocephala Muss. Puschk. ex Willd.
Bighead Knapweed
Centaurea macrocephala is a herbaceous perennial plant with mostly unbranched stems that can reach up to 170 cm in height. The leaves vary in shape and size, with those near the base having oval blades on petioles and higher leaves having shorter, narrower blades. The flower heads are solitary atop the stems, measuring 2.5 to 3.5 cm wide and covered in layers of phyllaries with fringed tips and sometimes spines. The heads contain many yellow florets, and the fruit, including its pappus, can be over one centimeter long. It is known for its large, rounded heads with long yellow florets.
