Betonica officinalis, commonly known as betony or wood betony, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. It grows up to 30-60 cm tall with narrowly oval leaves that have a heart-shaped base and toothed margins. The plant flowers from July to September, producing a calyx that is 5-7 mm long with five bristled teeth and a corolla that is 1-1.5 cm long.

The aerial parts of Betonica officinalis contain phenylethanoid glycosides such as betonyosides A-F, acetoside, and leucosceptoside B. The roots contain diterpene glycosides like betonicosides A-D and the diterpene betonicolide.

Uses:

Traditionally, Betonica officinalis has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes. It was believed to protect against harm when possessed and had numerous applications including easing pain, fever after childbirth, prevention of drunkenness, snake bites, and various pains. Modern uses include treatment for anxiety, gallstones, heartburn, high blood pressure, migraine, neuralgia, and as an ointment for cuts and sores.
