Arum maculatum

Arum maculatum L.

Arum maculatum

Arum maculatum, commonly known as cuckoopint or jack-in-the-pulpit, is a woodland flowering plant species. It is native to most of Europe, Eastern Turkey, and the Caucasus. The leaves appear in spring and are 7 to 20 cm long, followed by flowers on a spadix enclosed in a pale green spathe. The plant produces bright red, poisonous berries in autumn and has a large root-tuber for starch storage. It is propagated by birds dispersing seeds through eating the berries.
