A biennial plant that can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) in height. It has large, alternating, wavy-edged cordiform leaves with long petioles and pubescent undersides. The flowers are purple and grouped in globular capitula, united in clusters, appearing from July to September. The fruits are achenes with short pappus hairs that can cause skin irritation.

Burdock roots contain mucilage, sulfurous acetylene compounds, polyacetylenes, and bitter guaianolide-type constituents. Seeds contain arctigenin, arctiin, and butyrolactone lignans.

Uses:

The roots are edible when cooked and are widely consumed in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. The plant is also used in traditional medicine for its roots (Bardanae radix) and seeds (niubangzi). The leaves provide food for the caterpillars of some Lepidoptera species.
