Roman Chamomile

Roman chamomile is a low perennial plant with daisy-like white flowers and procumbent stems. The leaves are alternate, bipinnate, finely dissected, and downy to glabrous. The solitary, terminal flowerheads rise 20–30 cm (8–12 in) above the ground and consist of prominent yellow disk flowers and silver-white ray flowers. The plant has a sweet, crisp, fruity, and herbaceous fragrance.

Chamomile essential oil contains sesquiterpenes, terpene lactones (including the blue compound chamazulene), acetylene derivatives, and polyphenols. These compounds contribute to the fragrance and may be extracted individually.

Uses:

Roman chamomile is used in hair care and skincare products. It is also used to flavor foods, in herbal teas, perfumes, and cosmetics. In aromatherapy, it is believed to be a calming agent to reduce stress and promote sleep. It has been used in folk medicine for various ailments, although its medicinal efficacy is not scientifically confirmed. It also can be planted as a fragrant chamomile lawn.
