Anchusa officinalis L.
Common Bugloss
Common Bugloss, also known as common alkanet, is a flowering plant native to Europe and small parts of western Asia. It has been naturalized in various locations, including the United States and Argentina. The plant is known for its popularity with bumblebees due to its high nectar production. It grows as an annual, biennial, or perennial and can reach heights of 40 to 100 centimeters tall. The leaves are lance-linear with a tapering shape, and the flowers are densely packed in clusters at the ends of the stems. The flowers transition from dark pink or crimson to dark purple-blue with a white center, and they bloom from June to August.

The plant contains various phenolic acids, including p-Coumaric acid, danshensu, caffeic acid, neochlorogenic acid, salvianolic acid, and rosmarinic acid. Flavonoids and flavonols such as afzelin, Kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside, and rutin are also present.
Common Bugloss has been used in traditional medicines for its astringent and cooling properties. It was historically used to treat burns, ulcers, and skin pain. The roots were boiled in oil for healing wounds. The young leaves and shoots can be eaten raw or cooked, similar to spinach. However, the plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be toxic.
