Achillea millefolium, commonly known as yarrow or common yarrow, is a flowering plant native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe, and North America. It grows up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall and is characterized by small whitish flowers, a tall stem of fernlike leaves, and a pungent odor. The plant is perennial and herbaceous with a spreading rhizomatous growth form, producing one to several stems that can reach up to 1 meter in height. The leaves are fernlike, bipinnately or tripinnately divided, and the inflorescence contains both ray and disk flowers which are white to pink. The plant has a sweet scent similar to chrysanthemums and is known for its medicinal properties.

The essential oil of yarrow contains chemicals called proazulenes, including chamazulene and δ-Cadinol. The plant also contains isovaleric acid, salicylic acid, asparagine, sterols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids such as gallic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, sinapic acid, ferulic acid, cinnamic acid, myricetin, hesperidin, quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol, apigenin, rutin, and hyperoside.
Yarrow has been used in traditional medicine for its astringent properties and mild laxative effects. It was historically used to heal wounds, stop bleeding, and treat nosebleeds. The plant is also known for its use in traditional Native American medicine to reduce pain, fever, and aid sleep. In some cultures, yarrow is used in divination practices. The plant attracts beneficial insects and repels pests, making it useful as a companion plant.
