Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are toxic compounds readily absorbed via the stomach or skin and have the potential to cause liver toxicity. These alkaloids are of interest for their pharmacological properties but also pose significant health risks.
Traditionally, comfrey has been used for its medicinal properties. The leaves and shoots are edible, though the internal or long-term topical use is discouraged due to its toxicity. It has been used in traditional medicine for treating various disorders, including sprains, bruises, and bone fractures. The roots were used to make poultices for healing broken bones.
