The essential oil of Salvia sclarea contains various chemical compounds, including sclareol. Sclareol has a low molecular weight and is absorbed transdermally, making it effective for various applications.
Clary sage oil is widely used in perfumes and as a flavoring for vermouths, wines, and liqueurs. It is also used in aromatherapy. Historically, clary seeds have been used to remove foreign objects from the eye due to their mucilaginous coat. The plant has been used medicinally since ancient times, with references dating back to the 4th century BCE.
