The plant contains various compounds including furanoacridones, acridone alkaloids (arborinine and evoxanthine), coumarins, limonoids, umbelliferone, scopoletin, psoralen, xanthotoxin, isopimpinellin, rutamarin, and rutacultin. The essential oil of R. graveolens is composed mainly of undecan-2-one and nonan-2-one.

Uses:

Rue is used as an ornamental plant, culinary herb, and insect repellent. It has a long history of medicinal use, including as an emmenagogue and abortifacient. However, it should be used sparingly due to its toxic compounds. It is also used in traditional Jewish practices for protection against malevolent forces and in Sephardic culture for various medicinal purposes.
