Basil is an annual herb, but can be perennial or biennial in warmer climates. It grows to heights of 30-150 cm (1-5 feet) with glossy, ovate leaves that are either green or purple. The flowers are small and white, growing in spikes from the central stem.

Chemistry:

The essential oil of basil contains high concentrations of linalool and methyl chavicol (estragole) with a ratio of about 3:1. Other constituents include 1,8-cineole, eugenol, and myrcene. The clove scent of sweet basil is due to eugenol.

Uses:

Basil is widely used in cooking, both fresh and dried. It is a key ingredient in pesto and soups, and its seeds are used in Asian drinks and desserts. In folk medicine, basil is used in practices such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. The essential oil has insecticidal and insect-repelling properties, including potential toxicity to mosquitoes.
