Spearmint
Spearmint is a perennial herbaceous plant native to Europe and southern temperate Asia. The leaves are 5–9 cm long and 1.5–3 cm broad, with a serrated margin. The stem is square-shaped, characteristic of the mint family. Spearmint produces flowers in slender spikes, each flower pink or white in color, and relatively large seeds measuring 0.62–0.90 mm.

The aromatic oil of spearmint, known as oil of spearmint, contains R-(–)-carvone as the most abundant compound, giving it its distinctive smell. Other significant compounds include limonene, dihydrocarvone, and 1,8-cineol. Unlike peppermint oil, spearmint oil contains minimal amounts of menthol and menthone.
Spearmint is used as a flavoring in food and herbal teas. It has traditional medicinal uses and its essential oil is effective as a larvicide against mosquitoes and as an insecticide against adult moths. Spearmint oil also has antimicrobial properties, showing higher activity against gram-positive bacteria compared to gram-negative bacteria.
Spearmint flowers in the summer, typically from July to September in the northern hemisphere.
Spearmint can be sown in early spring or late summer.
