Peppermint is rich in menthol, menthone, and carboxyl esters such as menthyl acetate. Dried peppermint contains volatile oil with significant amounts of menthol, menthone, menthyl acetate, menthofuran, and 1,8-cineol. Additional compounds include limonene, pulegone, caryophyllene, and pinene. Peppermint oil is known for its natural pesticides pulegone and menthone, which repel pests like mosquitoes.
Peppermint is used extensively in culinary and medicinal applications. Fresh or dried leaves are used for peppermint tea, and the plant is a key flavoring agent in ice cream, candy, fruit preserves, alcoholic beverages, chewing gum, toothpaste, and various skin care products. Peppermint oil is effective for muscle pain, nerve pain, itching relief, and as a fragrance. It is also used in construction and plumbing to test for pipe leaks. Peppermint roots can bioaccumulate radium, making it useful for phytoremediation of radioactively contaminated soil.
