Ulmus laevis Pall.
Ulmus laevis
Ulmus laevis, commonly known as the European white elm or fluttering elm, is a large deciduous tree native to Europe. It is known for its extensive shallow root system and distinctive buttresses around the base of the trunk. The tree typically reaches a height and breadth of over 30 meters, with a trunk diameter less than 2 meters. The bark starts smooth and becomes deeply fissured with age, while the leaves are deciduous, alternate, simple ovate with a markedly asymmetric base. The tree is most reliably distinguished by its long flower stems and cream-colored wind-pollinated flowers that appear before the leaves in early spring. The fruit is a winged samara with a ciliate margin, and the seeds have a high germination rate.

The timber of Ulmus laevis is not dense but is valued for its rapid growth and tolerance to soil compaction, air pollution, and de-icing salts. It has been used for amenity planting in towns and along roadsides. In Finland, young trees were traditionally grown for the raw material of shaft bows, and its leathery bark was used in tough bindings.
