Large-leaved Lime

The large-leaved lime is a deciduous tree known for its broad leaves, reaching up to 40 meters in height. It has a narrowly domed shape with a moderate growth rate and reddish-brown young stems that develop dark grey bark as it matures. The leaves are ovate to cordate, mid to dark green above and with white downy hair on the underside. The flowers are small, fragrant, yellowish-white, and arranged in drooping clusters. The fruit is a round, tomentose nutlet.

The tree contains tannins, which can act as an astringent. The wood is used for charcoal, which has medicinal properties.

Uses:

The wood is used for carving and almost all parts of the tree can be used for fodder, ropes or firewood. Bast and honey were historically important products. The tree is also used for amenity purposes, shelterbelts, and game plantings in urban areas and recreational forestry. The wood is burned to charcoal and ingested for intestinal disorders and used topically for edema or infection. The tree is also known for attracting bees and butterflies, including the White-letter Hairstreak.
