Tilia platyphyllos Scop.
Tilia platyphyllos
Tilia platyphyllos, commonly known as the large-leaved lime or large-leaved linden, is a deciduous tree native to much of continental Europe and southwestern Great Britain. It grows on lime-rich soils and is known for its broad leaves, which are larger than those of the related Tilia cordata. The tree has a narrowly domed shape, with reddish-brown young stems that develop dark grey bark with fine fissures and furrows as they mature. The branches spread upwards at wide angles, and the twigs are reddish-green and slightly pubescent. The leaves are ovate to cordate, mid to dark green above and below with white downy hair on the underside, particularly along the veins. They taper into a mucronate tip and have sharply serrate margins. The tree produces small, fragrant, yellowish-white flowers arranged in drooping, cymose clusters and a fat, round, tomentose, cream-colored nutlet as fruit.

The plant contains tannins which act as an astringent. The wood is used to produce charcoal for medicinal purposes.
Tilia platyphyllos wood is used for carving, and almost all parts of the tree can be used for fodder, ropes, or firewood. The bast and honey from Tilia platyphyllos have historically been important products of the tree. The wood is also used to make charcoal, which can be ingested for intestinal disorders and applied topically for edema or infections like cellulitis. The tree is also important for amenity use, shelterbelts and game plantings in the open landscape, urban areas, and recreational forestry.
