Tilia cordata Mill.
Small-leaved Lime
The small-leaved lime, also known as Tilia cordata, is a deciduous tree native to much of Europe. It grows to heights of 20–40 meters (66–131 feet) with a trunk diameter of up to 1 meter. The tree has smooth, grayish bark when young and develops vertical ridges and horizontal fissures as it ages. The leaves are alternately arranged, rounded to triangular-ovate, and mostly hairless except for small tufts of brown hair in the leaf vein axils. The flowers are small, yellow-green, hermaphrodite, and produced in clusters of five to eleven in early summer. The fruit is a dry nut-like drupe, containing 1-2 brown seeds.

The tree produces small yellow-green flowers that are rich in scent, attracting bees. The wood is white and finely-grained, suitable for refined woodcarvings.
The tree is widely cultivated as an ornamental and shade tree. Its wood is used for carvings, light furniture, bee hives, and honeycomb frames. The flowers are used to make linden flower tea, known for its medicinal qualities. The leaves can be eaten as a salad vegetable, and the tree is also used for making shields.
