The essential oil within the plant contains thujone, a neurotoxic compound. The foliage is rich in vitamin C and has been used for medicinal purposes.
Commercially, it is used for rustic fencing and posts, lumber, poles, shingles, and in the construction of log cabins. It is also used for birchbark canoe ribs and planking, as well as in the construction of wooden canoes. The essential oil is used in cleansers, disinfectants, hair preparations, insecticides, liniment, room sprays, and soft soaps. The inner bark of the soft twigs has been used to make a soup, and teas from the twigs are used to relieve constipation and headaches. It is also a popular ornamental plant used in residential and commercial landscapes.
