Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.
Taxodium distichum
The bald cypress is a deciduous conifer known for its adaptability to various soil types, including wet, salty, dry, and swampy conditions. It is native to the southeastern United States and is valued for its rot-resistant heartwood, making it suitable for various construction materials. The tree typically grows to heights of 35–120 feet (10–40 m) and has a trunk diameter of 3–7 feet (0.9–2.1 m). The bark is grayish-brown to reddish-brown, thin, and fibrous with a stringy texture. The needle-like leaves are 1/2 to 3/4 inch (1.3 to 1.9 cm) long, green, and linear with entire margins, turning yellow or copper red in autumn. The tree produces cones in April, and the seeds ripen in October.

The heartwood of Taxodium distichum is known for its rot-resistant properties. The tree contains compounds that make it resistant to decay, particularly in moist environments.
The bald cypress is used for making fence posts, doors, flooring, caskets, and various other items due to its rot-resistant heartwood. It is also valued for its ornamental qualities, often used in groupings in public spaces and designated as the official state tree of Louisiana.
The seeds are typically sown in spring with pretreated seeds or in fall with untreated seeds.
