A deciduous shrub with a stiff, branching main stem. It can spread and colonize an area to form a dense thicket, reaching up to 1-2 meters in height. The leaves are oppositely arranged and generally oval, up to 5 centimeters long. The flowers are small, bell-shaped, bright pink, and arranged in racemes of up to 16 flowers. The fruit is a fleshy white berry-like drupe containing two seeds.
