Sorbus aucuparia L.

Sorbus aucuparia

Sorbus aucuparia, commonly known as rowan or mountain-ash, is a deciduous tree or shrub in the rose family Rosaceae. It grows up to 15 meters in height with a slender trunk and smooth bark. The leaves are pinnate with pairs of leaflets on a central vein, and the tree blooms from May to June in dense corymbs of small yellowish-white flowers. It produces small red pomes as fruit that ripen from August to October, which are eaten by many bird species. The tree is frost hardy and colonizes disrupted and inaccessible places as a short-lived pioneer species.
