The dried flower buds of the Japanese Pagoda Tree contain rutin and quercetin. The dried fruit contains flavonoid glycosides such as sophoricoside, genistin, and rutin, along with flavonoids like genistein, quercetin, and kaempferol. Additionally, the fruit contains alkaloids including cytisine, N-methylcytisine, sophocarpine, matrine, and stizolamine. The bark contains the alkaloid allomatrine.
The Japanese Pagoda Tree has several uses. Its wood is used to make strong, springy curved handles for traditional Japanese woodworking adzes. The tree's fruits have stress resistance and antioxidant properties, making them useful in traditional Chinese medicine. Additionally, the flowers and leaves are sometimes used for teas.
