The plant contains various phytochemicals including cytisine, biogenic amines (tyramine), flavonoids (spiraeoside and scoparoside), isoflavones, quinolizidine alkaloids (sparteine, lupanine, scoparin), and allelopathic compounds. These chemicals defend the plant against insect infestation and herbivores.
Common broom is used medicinally for its diuretic properties and as a cardiac stimulant. It contains scoparin, which can be used to treat dropsy due to its diuretic action. The plant is also used to make an ointment for treating gout and a medicinal beer known as broom ale. In Welsh mythology, Blodeuwedd is made from the flowers of broom among other plants.
