Sambucus racemosa
Red-berried Elder
Sambucus racemosa, commonly known as red-berried elder or red elderberry, is a medium-sized shrub that can grow up to 2-4 meters (7-13 feet) tall, although it rarely reaches 6 meters. The stems are soft with a broad pith. Each leaf is composed of 5 to 7 leaflike leaflets that are lance-shaped to narrowly oval and irregularly serrated. The leaflets have a strong, disagreeable scent when crushed. The inflorescence is a vaguely cone-shaped panicle consisting of several cymes of flowers, which are pink when closed and white, cream, or yellowish when open. Each flower has small, recurved petals and a star-shaped axis of five white stamens tipped in yellow anthers. The fruit is a bright red drupe containing 3 to 5 seeds, which are eaten by birds.
