Salix caprea, commonly known as goat willow or pussy willow, is a deciduous shrub or small tree reaching heights of up to 13 meters. It has broad leaves measuring 3–12 cm in length and 2–8 cm in width. The plant produces silvery, soft silky catkins before the new leaves appear; male and female catkins are on separate plants. The fruit is a small capsule containing numerous minute seeds embedded in fine, cottony hairs.

The bark of Salix caprea contains tannin and salicin, which have various medicinal and industrial uses. Tannins are used in tanning leather, while salicin is a precursor to aspirin.

Uses:

The plant is used medicinally for its tannin and salicin content. It is also cultivated for ornamental purposes, particularly the cultivar 'Kilmarnock,' which has stiffly pendulous shoots. In North Europe, the catkins are used like olive branches on Palm Sunday. The plant is also a source of willow flutes.
