Ruscus aculeatus L.
Butcher's Broom
Butcher's broom is a low evergreen dioecious Eurasian shrub characterized by flat shoots known as cladodes, which resemble stiff, spine-tipped leaves. It grows to a height of about 80 cm and produces small greenish flowers in the spring. These flowers are followed by red berries that attract birds for seed dispersal, and it also spreads vegetatively through rhizomes. Native to Eurasia and parts of northern Africa.

The primary phytochemicals in butcher's broom are steroidal saponins, including ruscogenins, ruscogenen, and neoruscogenin. These compounds have anti-inflammatory properties and are believed to cause vein constriction. Additionally, polyphenols with potential antioxidant activity have been identified.
Traditionally used as a diuretic and laxative, butcher's broom has also been employed to reduce swelling and aid in the recovery of fractures. Modern research indicates its antibacterial properties, which may have contributed to its historical use in cleaning butchering blocks. It is also cultivated as an ornamental plant.
